At Sequoia Grove, sustainability starts in the vineyard. Careful soil management, responsible water use and healthy vineyards are an important part of farming in Rutherford and of producing quality grapes year after year.
Sequoia Grove was among the first five wineries to be certified under the stricter Napa Green Vineyard standards.
Vineyard practices are adapted to the conditions of each site. Cover crops are selected according to soil type, vine cuttings are shredded and returned to the vineyard as mulch, and integrated pest management helps reduce the use of chemical treatments. Water use, soil health and biodiversity are also taken into account in day-to-day vineyard management.
Sequoia Grove has also dedicated vineyard land to the Rutherford Reach project, which supports the restoration of the natural habitat and flow of the Napa River.
Sustainability continues in the winery. As a Napa Green Certified Winery, Sequoia Grove monitors water and energy use throughout production and works to reduce consumption where possible.
Energy-efficient equipment and temperature management help limit energy use, while recycling and composting are part of everyday winery operations. Through Marin Clean Energy’s Deep Green program, Sequoia Grove is powered by 100% renewable energy.
These measures allow the winery to use resources more efficiently while maintaining the standards required for the production of Sequoia Grove wines.
A fairy ring of Coastal Redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens), planted around 1910, still stands at the winery today. The trees gave Sequoia Grove its name and remain a distinctive part of the estate.
Sequoia Grove also supports Save the Redwoods League, an organisation dedicated to protecting and restoring California’s redwood forests. As a member of 1% for the Planet, the winery contributes 1% of its annual sales to environmental organisations.
Sustainable practices are part of how Sequoia Grove manages its vineyards and winery, with the aim of using natural resources responsibly and maintaining the land for the years ahead.
